Hawfinch Collection

The Hawfinch is a species of finch belonging to the Passerines family of birds, and is native to Europe, Asia and North Africa, but has been introduced in other parts of the world, medium-sized bird with a thick bill and short wings. Its plumage is mainly brownish-grey with white patches on its wings and tail. Its diet consists mainly of seeds, nuts and fruits, which it obtains by cracking open hard shells with its powerful bill. It also feeds on insects during the breeding season. The Hawfinch nests in trees or shrubs, laying up to four eggs at a time which are incubated for 12 days before hatching. This species has suffered from habitat loss due to deforestation but remains widespread across much of its range and is not considered threatened at present.
