Mount Teide sited on the Canary Islands of the North West Coast of Africa and owned by Spain is 3187 metres high or just over 12, 000 feet, and is the highest point in Spain. Mount Teide being the third highest volcano in the world, last erupted in 1909. Its first eruption was reported to have been seen by Christopher Columbus during his voyage of discovery in 1492 while sailing past Tenerife. Other eruptions were recorded in 1704, 1705, 1706, and 1798. Presently classified as dormant it is generally accepted in the scientific world that it will erupt in the near future. The Gaunches, the initial inhabitants of Tenerife considered Teide to be sacred and the abode of Guayota, the devil. Many plants can only be found on Mount Teide. Such as White Broom and the Teide Daisy. The volcano and the surrounding area form part of the Teide National Park which is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The volcano is a important tourist attraction and can attract nearly 3 million visitors a year. This is vital to the economy of Tenerife. In the winter the summit temperature is generally recorded between -5 and - 10 degrees
