Wattled Crane Collection

The Wattled Crane (Bugeranus carunculatus) is a species of crane found in Africa and parts of the Middle East, and is a large bird, standing up to 1.2 m tall with a wingspan of 2.1 m and weighing up to 6 kg. The plumage is mainly grey with black flight feathers, white primary feathers, and red facial wattles on both sides of the head. Its diet consists mainly of insects, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and plant matter such as seeds and roots. It nests in shallow wetlands or grasslands near water sources such as rivers or lakes where it can find food easily. The Wattled Crane is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss from human activities such as agriculture and urbanization which has led to population declines across its range over the past few decades. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from further decline by protecting existing wetland habitats and restoring degraded wetlands for future generations of cranes to enjoy.
