The Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) is a species of cuckoo found in many parts of the world. It is a medium-sized bird, measuring between 32 and 34 cm in length, with a wingspan of up to 50 cm. The plumage is mainly greyish-brown, with white underparts and black barring on the wings and tail. The head has a distinctive black cap, while the bill is long and pointed.
The Common Cuckoo breeds across much of Europe and Asia, as well as parts of North Africa. It migrates south for the winter months to warmer climates such as India or sub-Saharan Africa. During its migration it can be seen in large flocks numbering hundreds or even thousands of birds at once!
The Common Cuckoo has an interesting breeding strategy; instead of building its own nest it will lay its eggs in other birds’ nests such as those belonging to warblers or thrushes. This means that when they hatch they are raised by another species entirely! This behaviour gives them an advantage over other birds which have to build their own nests; they don’t need to expend energy on nest building so they can focus on finding food for their young instead!
The Common Cuckoo feeds mainly on insects such as caterpillars and grasshoppers but will also take small reptiles like lizards if available. They hunt by perching high up in trees before swooping down onto their prey below them – this behaviour has earned them the nickname ‘flying mice’!
In conclusion, the Common Cuckoo is an interesting bird which plays an important role in many ecosystems around the world due to its unique breeding strategy and insectivorous diet. Its distinctive call can be heard throughout much of Europe during springtime – making it one of our most recognisable avian visitors!
