Black Bee Eater Collection

The Black Bee Eater (Merops gularis) is a species of bee-eating bird in the family Coraciiformes, and is native to sub-Saharan Africa, where it inhabits savannas and woodlands, black body with white patches on its wings and tail, as well as bright yellow eyes and beak. Its diet consists mainly of bees, wasps, dragonflies, grasshoppers, and other insects. It hunts by hovering in the air over open areas before swooping down to catch its prey with its long beak. During breeding season it builds a nest in an earthen bank or tree hollow lined with mud pellets and feathers. The female lays two to four eggs which are incubated for around three weeks before hatching into chicks that are fed by both parents until they fledge at around five weeks old. The Black Bee Eater is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to its wide range and stable population size.
