South American Snipe Collection

South American Snipe (Sandpipers Charadriiformes) are a species of shorebird found in South America. They have long, slender bills and are typically brown and white in color and can be found along the coasts of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. Their diet consists mainly of insects, worms and crustaceans which they forage for on the ground or in shallow water. During breeding season they form monogamous pairs and build their nests on the ground near water sources such as ponds or marshes. The female lays up to four eggs which both parents help incubate until hatching occurs after about three weeks. These birds migrate south during winter months to escape cold temperatures but return each spring to breed again in their native habitat and can an important part of many ecosystems due to their role as predators that help control insect populations.
