Jack Snipe Collection

Jack Snipe (Lymnocryptes minimus) is a small wading bird belonging to the family of Sandpipers (Charadriiformes), and is found in Europe, Asia and North America, distinctive brownish-black plumage with white speckles on its back and wings. Its bill is short and straight, with a yellowish base and has long legs that are adapted for wading in shallow water. During the breeding season, it nests on wet meadows or marshes, laying up to four eggs at a time. In winter, it migrates southwards to warmer climates where food is more abundant. Jack Snipes feed mainly on insects and worms which they catch by probing into mud or soft soil with their bills. They also eat some plant material such as seeds and berries when available.
