Common Redshank Collection

The Common Redshank (Tringa totanus) is a species of sandpiper in the family Charadriiformes, and is a migratory bird, breeding in northern Europe and western Asia and wintering mainly in southern Europe, Africa, and south-western Asia. The adult has reddish legs, a white rump and grey back. Its upper wings are dark grey with white spots on the tips of its primary feathers. The bill is long and black with an orange base. It feeds mainly on insects, worms and molluscs which it obtains by probing in mud or shallow water. During the breeding season it can be seen around wetland areas such as marshes, lakes or rivers where it nests on the ground near water's edge or amongst vegetation. In flight its wings produce distinctive 'tee-tink' calls which give rise to its name; redshank being derived from old English for 'redleg'.
