Pied Avocet Collection

The Pied Avocet (Recurvirostridae Charadriiformes) is a species of wading bird found in wetlands and estuaries across Europe, Asia, and Australia and has a distinctive black-and-white plumage with long, thin legs and an upturned bill. The Pied Avocet feeds on aquatic invertebrates such as shrimp, mollusks, worms, and insects which it finds by sweeping its bill from side to side in shallow water. During the breeding season the male will perform elaborate courtship displays to attract a mate. The female lays 3-4 eggs in a shallow scrape on the ground near water which are incubated for around 25 days before hatching. Both parents help to feed the young until they are able to fly at around 4 weeks old. The Pied Avocet is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to its large range and stable population numbers but is threatened by habitat destruction caused by human activities such as drainage of wetlands for agriculture or urban development.
