Great Auk Collection

The Great Auk (Auks Charadriiformes) was a species of flightless bird that lived in the North Atlantic Ocean. It was the only modern species in the genus Pinguinus and is believed to have become extinct in 1844. The Great Auk was a large, black-and-white seabird with a heavy body and short wings, reaching up to 75 cm (30 inches) tall. Its diet consisted mainly of fish, crustaceans, and molluscs which it caught by diving underwater. It nested on rocky islands off the coasts of Europe and North America where it laid one egg per year. Unfortunately, its eggs were highly sought after by collectors which led to its extinction due to overhunting and habitat destruction. The last known pair of Great Auks were killed on Eldey Island off Iceland in 1844; their stuffed remains are now kept at museums around the world as reminders of this once abundant species that is now lost forever.
