Cathartidae, also known as vultures, are a family of Accipitriformes birds in the order Falconiformes, and are found on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. Vultures have powerful hooked beaks and strong feet with sharp talons that enable them to tear apart their prey. They typically feed on carrion, but some species will also scavenge for food or hunt small animals. Vultures have keen eyesight and can spot prey from great distances; they often soar high in the air in search of food. They play an important role in nature by helping to clean up dead animals that would otherwise rot and spread disease. Vultures are essential to keeping ecosystems healthy, but unfortunately their populations have been declining due to human activities such as habitat destruction and poisoning from pesticides used on livestock carcasses.
