Southern Toad Collection

Southern Toads (Bufo terrestris) are a species of Nearctic Toads, which are amphibians in the family Bufonidae, and are found throughout the southeastern United States, from Virginia to Florida and west to Texas. Southern Toads have a wide range of habitats, including woodlands, wetlands, grasslands and even urban areas and can be identified by their dark brown or grayish-brown coloration with black spots on their back and sides. The underside is usually white or light yellow with dark spots. Southern Toads feed mainly on insects such as beetles and crickets but will also eat worms and other small invertebrates. Breeding takes place during the spring months when males call out to attract females for mating purposes. Females lay up to 20 eggs in shallow water where they hatch into tadpoles after about two weeks before eventually metamorphosing into adults after about three months, and are an important part of the ecosystem as they help control insect populations while also providing food for predators like snakes and birds of prey.
