This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the thoughtful and introsive nature of Dr. Cournand as he ponders over a medical chart or manuscript, his balding head casting an air of wisdom and experience. Born in Paris, Dr. Cournand immigrated to the United States in 1923, where he would go on to earn his medical degree from the University of Rochester in 1929. His career in medicine began with a focus on tuberculosis research, but it was his work in the 1940s and 1950s on the development of catheterization techniques for diagnosing and treating heart conditions that would cement his place in medical history. Dr. Cournand's pioneering work, in collaboration with Dickinson Richards and Werner Forssmann, led to the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1956.
