EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the spirit of determination and innovation embodied by Amy Johnson, a pioneering British aviator. Known as "Mrs Mollison" after her marriage to Australian millionaire Jim Mollison, Johnson made history with her record-breaking flights during the 1930s. In this image, taken in 1935, she is seen wearing her flying goggles and a confident smile as she poses with a cigar in hand. Born in 1903, Johnson broke the record for the fastest solo flight from England to Australia in 1930, covering the distance in just 19 hours and 11 minutes. She continued to push the boundaries of aviation, setting new records for transatlantic and trans-Pacific flights. Her achievements earned her numerous accolades, including the Harmon Trophy for the most meritorious flight of the year in 1930 and the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1935. Despite her successes, Johnson's life was not without tragedy. In 1941, she disappeared during a solo flight from London to Sydney, Australia, and was presumed dead. Her plane was later found in the Thames Estuary, but the cause of the crash remains a mystery. This photograph is a testament to Johnson's indomitable spirit and her place in aviation history. As one of the first female pilots to gain international recognition, she paved the way for future generations of aviators and inspired countless women to pursue their dreams. This Cig card, featuring a rare and intimate glimpse into Johnson's life, is a valuable historical artifact that continues to captivate and inspire.
