EDITORS COMMENTS
In the early hours of July 17, 1918, American troops of the 103rd Regiment Infantry, 26th Division, began their advance on the small French village of Torcy, located in the northern region of France. The date marked the final stages of the First World War, and the American Expeditionary Forces were making their final push towards the German front lines. As the sun rose over the battlefield, the soldiers of the 103rd Regiment, clad in their white uniforms, moved stealthily through the fields and woods, skirting the edges to avoid detection. The air was thick with the acrid smell of gunpowder and smoke, a constant reminder of the carnage that had taken place in the area just hours before. The 26th Division, also known as the "Blue and Gray Division," was made up of National Guard units from 26 states. These men had been training together for years, and their camaraderie and discipline were evident as they moved forward, each man focused on his task. The advance on Torcy was a critical moment in the war, as the village was a key strategic position for the German forces. The success of the American assault would pave the way for the final push towards the German border and the eventual end of the war. As the troops moved forward, they knew that the battle ahead would be fierce, but they were determined to succeed. The sun began to rise, casting a golden light over the battlefield, and the sound of gunfire could be heard in the distance. The American soldiers pressed on, their spirits high and their resolve unwavering. This image captures a moment in history, a moment of bravery and determination as American troops advanced towards their objective in the final days of the First World War.
