EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic presence of Hunkpapa Lakota leader Sitting Bull (c. 1831-1890), taken in 1890, just a few short years before his death. In this image, Sitting Bull is depicted sitting in a simple chair, his gaze fixed intently on the camera lens. His hair is styled in long pig tails, a departure from the full-length war bonnet that he is more commonly known for. He wears only two feathers, adorning the front and back of his head, adding an air of both regality and mystery. Sitting Bull is considered one of the most significant figures in American Indian history. Born in what is now South Dakota, he rose to prominence as a military leader during the Great Sioux War of 1876, famously defeating General Custer's forces at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. However, his later years were marked by resistance against the encroachment of white settlers on Native American lands. This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, is a poignant reminder of a complex and fascinating historical figure. Sitting Bull's image has been widely circulated and reproduced, but this particular image, with its intimate and unadorned portrayal, offers a unique perspective on the man and his legacy. This image is a rights-managed print from Mary Evans Picture Library, reference number ILN 21/07/07/021. It is an important historical document, providing a glimpse into the life of a Native American leader who continues to captivate the imagination and inspire respect and admiration.
