This evocative image from the annals of biblical history depicts the aftermath of a daring raid by the Amalekites on the Israelite city of Ziklag, during the absence of their leader, David. The Amalekites, ancient enemies of the Israelites, saw an opportunity in David's absence to loot and plunder the city, taking captive the women and children, and seizing their property. The scene captured in this print shows the desolation and devastation left in the wake of the Amalekite attack. Smoke rises from the burning ruins of Ziklag as the Amalekites celebrate their victory, unaware of the impending retribution. However, the story does not end there.
