EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the moment of triumph for the Allied forces during the Crimean War, as French and British soldiers celebrate their successful capture of the town of Kertch in June 1855. The Crimean War, which lasted from 1853 to 1856, was a major European conflict fought between Russia and an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, the United Kingdom, and Sardinia. The battle for Kertch was a significant turning point in the war, as it allowed the Allies to gain a strategic foothold on the Crimean peninsula and put pressure on the Russian forces. The print depicts a jubilant scene, with soldiers raising their hats and waving flags in victory. The town of Kertch, located on the eastern tip of the Crimean peninsula, can be seen in the background, with its fortified walls and towers still standing despite the fierce fighting. The soldiers appear exhausted but elated, their uniforms bearing the marks of battle. The Crimean War was a costly and brutal conflict, with heavy casualties on both sides. The siege of Sevastopol, which began in September 1854 and lasted until the city's surrender in September 1855, was one of the most famous battles of the war. The war ultimately ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in March 1856, which forced Russia to cede territories to the Ottoman Empire and grant various concessions to the Allied powers. This historic print offers a glimpse into the intense and dramatic events of the Crimean War, and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers on all sides during this pivotal moment in European history.
