EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph captures a pivotal moment in World War II history as Allied Paratroops descend into the Rees-Wesel area of Germany during Operation Varsity on March 24, 1945. The largest and most successful airborne operation of the Second World War, Operation Varsity involved over 16,000 American, Canadian, and British paratroops and glider troops who were dropped behind enemy lines to secure key bridges and roads, and to support the advancing ground forces. The operation marked a decisive turning point in the war, as it allowed the Allies to bypass the heavily fortified German defenses along the Rhine River and advance towards the heart of Germany. The image shows the paratroops in mid-air, suspended between the sky and the ground, as they prepare to land and begin their mission. The historical significance of this operation is evident in the size of the aerial view, which underscores the scale of the military effort and the bravery of the troops involved. This photograph is an important reminder of the pivotal role that airborne operations played in the outcome of the Second World War.
