EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph captures the moment after the Allied Airborne Army's daring attempt to change the tide of the Second World War. On September 17, 1944, Operation Market Garden was initiated, a bold plan masterminded by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery to drop thousands of British and American troops behind enemy lines in Holland. The British First Airborne Division, along with the American 81st and 101st Airborne Divisions, took part in the operation with the ultimate goal of capturing an invasion route into Germany. The image shows the aftermath of the landing, with Allied airborne gliders scattered across the Dutch countryside. The operation, while historically significant, ultimately proved unsuccessful. The troops faced fierce resistance from the German forces and were unable to secure the crucial bridge at Arnhem, which had been the primary objective of the mission. Despite the outcome, the courage and determination of the Allied troops on this day are a testament to the sacrifices made during the Second World War. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the pivotal role played by the Allied Airborne Army in the larger context of the war effort.
