Allied action at Arsuf, Middle East, WW1

Allied action on the Mediterranean coast at Arsuf in the Middle East (now in Israel) during the First World War. Sandbag defences are being held by the 2nd Battalion Black Watch. Long khaki drill trousers were worn with a short puttee round the ankle instead of the kilt during the summer, to guard against the risk of infection from mosquito bites.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from June 1918, the 2nd Battalion Black Watch of the British Army can be seen holding the sandbag defences at Arsuf on the Mediterranean coast in the Middle East, now part of modern-day Israel. The Allied forces were engaged in intense action against the Ottoman Empire during World War 1. The summer heat of the Middle Eastern climate posed a significant challenge to the soldiers, leading them to wear long khaki drill trousers instead of their traditional kilts to protect against mosquito bites and the risk of infection. The men are seen here in various positions, with some manning artillery pieces and others standing at the ready with rifles. The sandbag defences were a crucial part of the Allied line, providing protection against enemy attacks. The rugged terrain and harsh conditions of the region made for challenging fighting, with the soldiers enduring long hours in the scorching sun. Despite the difficult circumstances, the determination and resilience of the Allied forces shines through in this image. The soldiers' focus and discipline are evident as they carry out their duties, ensuring the defence of the coastline and the advancement of the Allied cause in the Middle East during World War 1. This photograph, taken by Robert Hunt for the Imperial War Museum, offers a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served during this global conflict. It is a testament to their courage and the importance of their contributions to the eventual Allied victory.
