The Daughters of Babylon by Wilson Barrett Featured 12 Dec 2016 Print

The Daughters of Babylon by Wilson Barrett

The Daughters of Babylon by Wilson Barrett (1848 - 1904) and Robert Hichens (1864 - 1950). First produced at the Lyric Theatre on 6th February 1897. Depicted is Ishtar, the exquisite and infamous Strange Woman of Babylon. The artist is John Hassall. According to The Poster June 1898 Vol. 1 no. 1, p. 21, his work is shown here to great advantage. The Eastern atmosphere is still and balmy; the figure of the luscious and imposing woman gives feeling and repose. The colour too is delightful and sympathetic. Date: 1898
