Fuschia flowers!Fuchsia is a genus of flowering plants that consists mostly of shrubs or small trees. The first, Fuchsia triphylla, was discovered on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola (present day Dominican Republic and Haiti) in 1703 by the French Minim monk and botanist, Charles Plumier. He named the new genus after the renowned German botanist Leonhart Fuchs (1501to1566) The Fuchsia flower has four long, slender sepals and four shorter, broader petals; in many species the sepals are bright red and the petals purple (colours that attract the hummingbirds that pollinate them), but the colours can vary from white to dark red, purple-blue, and even orange.For those interested, the anatomy is as follows:1:at the top the green stem is the PEDICLE2:the thicker bit of green is the OVARY3:then you have the (red here) TEPALS4:the mauve petals are the COROLLA5:there are 8 aATAMEN/FILAMENTS/ANTHERS6: And finally: the STYLE or PISTIL, with at the end:7:the STIGMA: the sticky tip of a flower pistil, on which pollen is deposited at the beginning of pollination
