Third from the right in the back row is Edwin Schrodinger. These conferences were started by the Belgian physicist Ernest Solvay (1838-1922) in 1911. At them, some of the leading thinkers of the day in physics, chemistry and sociology discussed recent advances in their fields. Many of the ideas about quantum mechanics, the atom and cosmology were developed at them. Photographed in 1924

Bernard Lovell, British astronomer

Bernard Lovell (1913-2012), British physicist and astronomer. Lovell founded the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, UK, to house his 76 metre Mark 1A telescope. The Mark 1 was the world's first giant dish radio telescope. It was commissioned in 1957 after an epic construction effort lasting 6 years. After improvements in 1970/71 it was designated the Mark 1A. Originally a physicist, Lovell worked on cosmic ray studies before World War II, when he helped to develop radar.
