A German Fokker D VII fighter plane on an airfield towards the end of the First World War. It had a 180 hp Mercedes engine, and was a single-seat fighter plane. Damage by machine gun bullets can be seen on the radiator. Date: circa 1918

Underground mining began in 1897 at the Sons of Gwalia mine that became the largest and deepest in Australia. The mine closed in 1963 and the population disappeared almost overnight.
