Alfred Adler, Austrian psychiatrist

Alfred Adler (1870-1937), Austrian psychologist. Adler was a contemporary of Sigmund Freud, and was invited by him to join the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society. Adler disagreed with Freud's theory that mental disorders had their roots in sexual traumas, and further disagreed with the sexual emphasis in Freud's dream interpretations. In 1911, Adler left Freud's group and formed his own school. In his book The Neurotic Constitution (1912) he outlined his theory of Individual Psychology': looking at a person as a whole rather than dividing them into smaller pieces. He also introduced the concept of an inferiority complex

Photograph: A well-concealed Bren Gunner of the 7th Gurkha Rifles amongst the thick foliage of the Burmese jungle, 1944 (c). The soldier depicted was probably a member of the 1st Battalion, part of 48th Indian Infantry Brigade of 17th Indian Division. The latter had the distinction of being almost continually in combat during the three-year long Burma Campaign.From a photograph album of 63 photographs presented to The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, by the officers, 7th Gurkha Rifles. Date: circa 1944
