Aurora borealis and Moon Featured 15 Jun 2010 Print

Aurora borealis and Moon

Aurora borealis and Moon over mountains and trees by a river. This coloured light display (the northern lights) is visible in the night sky at high latitudes. It occurs when charged and energetic particles from the Sun (the solar wind) are drawn by Earth's magnetic field to the polar regions. Hundreds of kilometres up, they collide with gas molecules and atoms, causing them to emit light. Photographed by the Koyukuk River, near Wiseman, Alaska, USA

Silhouette of Razorbill (Alca torda) against sunset, flapping wings. June 2010. Photographer quote: A cacophonous seabird colony on a summers evening is just spell-binding. Throw in a decent sunset and life doesn't get any better. Did you know? The UK holds internationally important populations of seabirds like puffins, gannets and razorbills. If you've never visited a seabird colony do it!. 2020VISION Book Plate
