1731 Johann Scheuchzer planet orbit

1731 Physica Sacra (Sacred Physics) by Johann Scheuchzer (1672-1733) folio copper engraving drawn by a team of engravers under the direction of Johann Andreas Pfeffel (1674-1748). The orbits of the planets Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter (and its moons) and Saturn (plus its moons) are drawn as non-concentric circles around the sun. The goal of Scheuchzer's work was to use the best contemporary science to illuminate the biblical account of human history in a sequence of 745 plates. At the time there was little doubt that science (physica) supported the literal truth of the Biblical chronology of creation and history. The frame is a sample of a larger picture

Outside the National Rent Office after the arrest of O'Brien and Dillon, Loughrea, Ireland, 1887

Outside the National Rent Office after the arrest of O'Brien and Dillon, Loughrea, Ireland, 1887. A scene during the Irish Land League agitation. Founded in 1879, with Charles Stewart Parnell as its president, the Irish Land League campaigned on behalf of tenant farmers with the intention of reducing rents to a fair level. Its ultimate objective was to provide tenants with the opportunity of owning the land they worked on. The League organised rent strikes, which led to evictions by police acting on behalf of landlords in what became known as the Land War, which lasted from 1880 until 1892.. A print from The Illustrated London News, 1st January 1887
