Cerebellum tissue, light micrograph

Cerebellum tissue. Confocal light micrograph of a section through the cerebellum of the brain. Purkinje cells, a type of neuron (nerve cell), are red. Glial cells, a type of support cell, are green, and cell nuclei are blue. Purkinje cells consist of a flask-shaped cell body with many branching processes (dendrites) that receive impulses from other cells. Purkinje cells form the junction between the granular and molecular layers of the grey matter of the cerebellum. The glial cells provide structural support, and nutrients and oxygen for the Purkinje cells. The cerebellum controls balance, posture and muscle coordination

Heart muscle, confocal light micrograph Featured 13 Aug 2009 Image

Heart muscle, confocal light micrograph

Heart muscle. Confocal light micrograph of a section through cardiac (heart) muscle. Cardiac muscle consists of branching elongated muscle cells, called myocytes (stained with green fluorescent protein), which form fibres. Myocytes consist of microfilaments of the contractile proteins actin and myosin, and a centrally located nucleus (blue). Calcium-binding protein is stained red. Calcium is essential for signalling between the nerves and muscle fibres, and for the contraction of the muscle fibres. Cardiac muscle is myogenic, it can cause its own contraction without any other input. A blood vessel (oval) is seen at centre left
