Human anatomy Featured 6 Jan 2005 Print

Human anatomy

Human anatomy. Man with his limbs in two poses, overlaid with an artwork of his internal organs and blood vessels. The heart is seen in the centre of his upper chest, and from it extends the network of blood vessels that supply the body with oxygen. Other organs seen include the stomach (below heart at centre right) and part of the colon (large intestine, below stomach). The poses and the framing devices of a circle and square are based on drawings by the Italian scientist and artist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

Snake scales Featured 6 Jan 2005 Print

Snake scales

Snake scales. Close-up of the scales covering the skin of a snake. Snake scales are made of keratin, the same material that is found in fingernails in humans. Scales can be keeled (ridged), granular (rough) or smooth. Most snakes use specialised scales on the underside of their body to grip surfaces as they move. A snake's skin and scales are periodically shed in one piece to reveal a new set underneath
