Oil pipeline. Construction of an oil pipeline through an area of cloud forest. The Oleoducto Crudo Pesado pipeline, completed in October 2003, transports between 390, 000 and 450, 000 barrels of crude oil per day from the Ecuadorian Amazonian to Esmeraldas on the coast. The project met with opposition from environmentalists because of the damage caused to the cloud forest during construction of the pipeline, the threat of future exploitation of the Amazon region for oil, and the risk of pollution

Cultured Staphylococcus bacteria

Staphylococcus bacteria. Cultured colonies of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in a petri dish. S. aureus is a Gram-positive, non- motile, spherical bacterium associated with suppurative infections in humans, such as boils and abscesses, and with respiratory infections, such as pneumonia. It produces toxins responsible for food poisoning. These bacteria have been cultured on Chapman medium, which is selective for Staphylococcus bacteria. Selective media are used to check for the presence of specific bacteria
