Male torso skeleton Featured 27 Jun 2003 Print

Male torso skeleton

Male torso skeleton. The bones of the chest and abdomen surround and protect the organs and provide support for the body. The ribcage (upper frame) encloses the heart and lungs. The pelvis (at bottom) forms the base of the abdominal cavity. The male pelvis is relatively narrower, and the ischia (loops of bone at bottom) meet at a more acute angle than in the female. The structural differences in the female facilitate the passage of a baby during childbirth. For a female torso skeleton, see image P116/486

Male skeleton

Male skeleton. The bones of the skeleton provide a structural framework for the body, and protect the internal organs. The male skeleton differs from the female in that the shoulders and chest are wider, and the pelvis is not as wide as in the female. For a female skeleton, see image P100/091
