The Yorkshire Coast, BR poster, 1950s Featured February Image

The Yorkshire Coast, BR poster, 1950s

Poster produced for British Railways (BR) to promote rail travel to the Yorkshire coast. The poster shows a view of Robin Hood's Bay, which lies on the Yorkshire coast between Whitby and Scarborough. Whilst the association of the legendary figure of Robin Hood with the town is probably dubious, it was home to a thriving smuggling industry in past times. Artwork by Frank Sherwin

Bath - The Georgian City, BR poster, 1950 Featured February Image

Bath - The Georgian City, BR poster, 1950

Poster produced by British Railways (BR) to promote rail travel to Bath, North East Somerset. The poster shows a view of the Pump Room, part of the baths built by the Romans who were drawn to Bath, which they named Aquae Sulis, because of its unique natural hot springs. In the 18th century, Bath was the most fashionable resort in England. Artwork by Claude Buckle (1905-1973), who originally trained as an architect, but later turned to pictorial art. He painted in both oil and watercolour and was a prolific poster artist for Great Western Railway (GWR) and BR. Much of his original poster artwork is held at the National Railway Museum
