Glaucoma Featured 29 Mar 2001 Image

Glaucoma. Artwork showing the flow of the watery aqueous humour (arrows) in a human eye with glaucoma, abnormally high pressure in the eye. The humour, which is continuously produced from blood capillaries, can no longer flow out of the eye through the Schlemm's canals (small dark blue tubes in cross-section at upper & lower centre). The resulting rise in pressure crushes the blood vessels that supply the optic nerve fibres with blood, killing the fibres and slowly causing blindness. In a healthy eye, the aqueous humour fills the chamber between the cornea (pale blue arch, centre) and lens (pale blue oval, centre right), maintaining the eye's shape
