Pumpkin cut into Halloween lantern

Pumpkin. Pumpkin, Cucurbita pepo, among dead leaves. The pumpkin has been hollowed and has had a face cut into its skin. This was done in order to create a lantern (jack o lantern) in order to celebrate Hallowe'en, an ancient festival observed in the USA, Britain and Ireland. Pumpkins are large fruits with a thick orange rind, firm flesh similar to the vegetable marrow, and numerous seeds. The flesh of the mature fruit, which ripens in the summer and autumn, is used for baking, making jam and for pies. Pumpkins are also used as livestock feed. Photographed in autumn in British Columbia, Canada
