Carnivorous theropod dinosaur footprint

Dinosaur footprint. View of a dinosaur footprint (centre right) in sandstone, made by a carnivorous theropod. It is from the middle Jurassic period (175-180 million years ago). This footprint was made in the soft mud of a coastal flood plain. This was later covered by a layer of sediment, preserving the footprint. The footprint was later exposed by erosion. Theropods were nearly all two- legged carnivores, the most famous of which was Tyrannosaurus rex. Footprints such as this show that theropods moved faster and more purposefully in their movements than large plant- eating dinosaurs. Photographed at the Burniston Dinosaur Beds, North Yorkshire, England
