The three billion base pairs that form the genetic code of human DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) are collectively known as the human genome. Each of the coloured bands represents the position of one of the four nucleotide bases that form the code. As each person's genetic code is unique this sequence is called a DNA fingerprint. The BOAC Comet 4 beat the much publicised Pan American Airways Boeing 707 in setting up the first transatlantic jet service, with clearance gained from Idlewild airport, New York, the Comet 4 set up aviation history from London airport (pictured). Simultaneously a Comet 4 from New York took off to set a double way crossing.
