Moraxella catarrhalis bacterium dividing
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Moraxella catarrhalis bacteria undergoing cell division. Here, two sister cells have almost formed; the DNA genetic material can be seen at centre (pink). Moraxella is a Gram-negative cocci bacteria, species of which inhabit the mouth and throat, skin and genito- urinary tracts of humans. M. catarrhalis is one of the bacteria responsible for catarrh: the excessive secretion of phlegm or mucous by the nose, sinuses or air passages. Other Moraxella sp. infections include: conjunctivitis, vaginal discharge, & arthritis. Treatment is with penicillin. Magnification: x10,625 at 6x7cm size
