The red Indians are on the march again... or at least members of the 1st Holme Valley

The red Indians are on the march again... or at least members of the 1st Holme Valley Torchlight Procession at the weekend. There were nearly 60 entries for this year's procession, including majorettes, brownies, cubs, guides, scouts and brass bands. There were also 30 floats, wagons and vintage cars. The cavalcade lead by special guests actor Bill Owen, who plays Compo, and producer Alan Bell, from the BBC TV series Last of the Summer Wine - went from Holmfirth Drill Hall along the main road to Holmbridge. "It was the best procession we have had," said procession committee chairman Mr David Lewis. "It was out of this world." The floats all carried flaming torches supplied by Standard Fireworks and were decked out with fairy lights. Holmfirth and Meltham Lions made collections along the route, and raised a record £602.12. The profits will be distributed among youth groups and bands in the valley. 14th September 1986
