Playing the "planet game" at a rain soaked Brighouse Fun Day were (from left) Craig Leitch, Emily Stevenson and Joanna Dawson. Jackie Merrick - alias actor Ian Sharrock - took time off from Emmerdale Farm to open the Fun Day at Wellhome Park, Brighouse. The opening followed a parade to the park from a nearby supermarket car park by entrants in a fancy dress contest. The parade was led by Brighouse Royal British Legion Drum and Bugle Corps. Six youth organisations from Brighouse entered an "it's a knockout" competition organized by Mr. Jack Heymer, of Shelf Youth Club. The contests winners were Eastfield Youth Club, Lightcliffe. Teams of youngsters aged 13 to 18 were competing for a trophy donated by Mr. Andrew J. Taylforth, chairman of the Brighouse Youth Year steering group, which organized the fun day. Mr. Barry Dawson organized games for the under thirteens and the winners of the fancy dress competition were presented with prizes donated by Brighouse Lions Club. Organisations with stalls at the fun day donated £10 each to the main Calderdale International Youth Year funds. 4th August 1985
