In this striking photograph from 1906, His Majesty Alfonso XIII of Spain is seen doffing his cap in a gesture of respect and affection towards his fiancée, Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, as they stroll along the picturesque beachfront of Biarritz, France. The couple's engagement was announced in January of that year, and their wedding was set to take place later in the autumn. Alfonso XIII, who reigned from 1886 until his abdication in 1931, was known for his love of the sea and the outdoors. Biarritz, a popular resort town on the Bay of Biscay, was a favorite destination for the Spanish royal family, who spent many summers there.
