Born in 1873 in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, France, Carrel's groundbreaking research in the fields of surgery and tissue culture earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1912, alongside his collaborator, Alexandre Nicolaïeff. Carrel's pioneering work in the field of tissue culture, which involved cultivating and maintaining living tissue outside of a living organism, revolutionized the scientific world. His methods allowed for the growth of tissue grafts, which were used to repair damaged organs and save countless lives. Carrel's research also extended to the study of the aging process, and he was a vocal proponent of the idea that cells could be immortal.
