1810 1868 Alexandre Ambassador Colonna Comte Countess Diplomat Florian Napoleon Walewska Walewski

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Alexandre Colonna-Walewski, the natural son of Napoleon Bonaparte and Countess Marie Walewska, in the prime of his diplomatic career. Born in 1810, Alexandre was the result of a passionate love affair between Napoleon and the Polish countess during the Napoleonic Wars. Raised in Poland, Alexandre was educated in France and later joined the French diplomatic service in 1834. In 1846, Alexandre was appointed as the French ambassador to the Court of St. James's in London, a position he held until 1848. The image shows Alexandre in formal attire, wearing the insignia of a French ambassador, including the Order of the Legion of Honor. His piercing gaze and confident demeanor convey a sense of intelligence and diplomatic acumen. The photograph was taken in 1868, during a later period in Alexandre's life when he had retired from diplomacy and was living in Poland. The image serves as a reminder of his historic connection to Napoleon and his significant role as a French diplomat, particularly as the ambassador to Britain during a time of political and diplomatic turmoil. Alexandre's life was marked by his complex heritage and his close relationship with Napoleon, who recognized him as his son and granted him the title of Comte Walewski. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a man who straddled two worlds - Polish and French, noble and commoner, and who played a crucial role in French diplomacy during the 19th century.
