EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print depicts the renowned French artist Alexandre Cabanel, captured in a portrait photograph taken in 1889, towards the end of his prolific career. Born on November 18, 1823, in Aubenas, Ardèche, France, Cabanel was a leading figure in the French academic art scene of the 19th century. Cabanel's artistic training began at a young age, and he went on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the tutelage of Paul Delaroche. His talent was quickly recognized, and he won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1846, which enabled him to study in Italy for several years. Upon his return to France, Cabanel's career took off, and he became a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1854. He was known for his highly detailed and realistic paintings, often depicting mythological and historical subjects. Some of his most famous works include "The Birth of Venus," "The Three Graces," and "The Marriage of Psyche and Cupid." Cabanel's influence on French art was significant, and he was a key figure in the development of the academic style. He was also a member of the Institut de France and the Académie des Beaux-Arts. In 1872, he was appointed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. This photograph of Cabanel, taken in 1889, captures the artist in his later years, with his white beard and distinguished appearance. It serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of this great French artist, whose works continue to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
