EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph captures Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel, a pioneering French physicist, in the year 1865. Born on March 15, 1820, Becquerel is best known for his discovery of the photovoltaic effect, a crucial precursor to the development of solar energy. Becquerel's groundbreaking work began in 1839 when he was just 19 years old. He discovered that a silver chloride-coated silver plate, when exposed to sunlight, produced an electric current. This discovery, which came before the invention of the photographic process, was a significant milestone in the field of electromagnetism. In 1848, Becquerel was appointed professor of physics at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. He continued his research and made further important discoveries, including the phenomenon of fluorescence and the use of X-rays to take the first medical images. Becquerel's work laid the foundation for the development of the photovoltaic cell, which converts sunlight directly into electricity. His discovery was a turning point in the history of physics and paved the way for the modern solar energy industry. This photograph of Becquerel, taken in 1865, captures him in the prime of his career. With a keen intellect and an insatiable curiosity, Becquerel's contributions to the field of physics have left an indelible mark on scientific history. His legacy continues to inspire and influence scientists and researchers around the world." Mary Evans Picture Library/Mary Evans
