This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic beauty and regal grace of Alexandra Fyodorovna, Empress of Russia and wife of Tsar Nicholas II. Born Alice of Hesse and by Rhine in 1872, Alexandra was the eldest daughter of Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom. Her marriage to Tsar Nicholas II in 1894 united Russia and Germany, two powerful European empires, and marked the beginning of a tumultuous reign. In this image, Alexandra is depicted wearing a magnificent diamond and pearl tiara, a gift from her mother-in-law, Empress Maria Feodorovna, on the occasion of her wedding. The tiara, known as the "Russian Fringe Tiara," is adorned with cascading pearls and diamonds, and is a symbol of her new role as Empress of Russia. Alexandra is also wearing a veil, a traditional bridal accessory in Russian Orthodox weddings. Her delicate white veil, adorned with intricate lace and pearls, adds to her ethereal beauty and underlines her status as a royal bride.
