EDITORS COMMENTS
This oval carte-de-visite (CDV) features a young and radiant Alexandra of Denmark (1844-1925), who would later become Queen Consort of the United Kingdom and Empress of India upon her marriage to Prince Albert Edward, later known as King Edward VII, in 1863. The photograph, taken prior to her marriage, captures the essence of her charm and grace, with her expressive eyes and delicate features. Born on December 1, 1844, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Alexandra was the eldest daughter of Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein and Princess Louise Rasmussen-Levetzau. Her Danish heritage, along with her mother's English and Scottish ancestry, made her a fitting choice as a bride for the future King of England. Prince Albert Edward, the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, was a popular and charismatic figure in British society. His courtship of Alexandra was the subject of much public interest, and their wedding on March 10, 1863, was a grand affair attended by dignitaries and royals from around the world. Alexandra's reign as Queen Consort was marked by her dedication to her husband and her charitable work. She was a patron of numerous organizations and was known for her support of military causes, as well as her advocacy for the welfare of children and the sick. This evocative CDV offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on British history. Her marriage to Edward VII brought about a new era of modernization and social change, and her legacy continues to inspire and intrigue to this day.
