Born Alice of Hesse and by Rhine in 1872, Alexandra was the eldest daughter of Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom. Her marriage to Tsar Nicholas II in 1894 united Russia and Germany, two powerful European empires, and marked the beginning of a tumultuous reign.
