EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the pivotal moment in history when the legendary Greek conqueror, Alexander the Great, defeated King Porus of the Paurava Dynasty on the banks of the Hydaspes River in 326 BC. The battle, which took place in the northwestern region of India, now modern-day Pakistan, marked a significant turning point in Alexander's Indian campaign. Alexander, clad in his iconic armor and helmet, stands victoriously on his horse, brandishing his sword in triumph. Behind him, his troops form a disciplined phalanx, their shields glinting in the sun. Porus, a regal figure on his elephant, gazes at Alexander with a mixture of admiration and defeat. The Hydaspes River, now known as the Jhelum, flows calmly in the background, mirroring the tranquility that followed the decisive battle. The Paurava Kingdom, located in present-day Punjab, was a formidable force in the region. Porus, a skilled warrior and a just ruler, had a large and well-equipped army, including a formidable elephant corps. Despite this, he was no match for Alexander's tactical brilliance and the superior training and discipline of his Macedonian troops. The defeat of Porus opened the doors for Alexander to further expand his empire into India, marking the beginning of the Hellenistic period in Indian history. The cultural exchange between the Greeks and the Indians during this time had a profound impact on both civilizations, leaving a lasting legacy that can still be seen today.
