Alexander Darius Driving Horde Issus Mercenaries Persia Routs Asiatics

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print depicts a pivotal moment in ancient history: the Battle of Issus, fought between the Macedonian king Alexander III, also known as Alexander the Great, and the Persian king Darius III near Iskanderun in modern-day Turkey on November 333 BC. The battle took place in the eastern Mediterranean region and marked a turning point in the long-lasting Greco-Persian Wars. Alexander, leading a formidable army of 35,000 infantry, 6,000 cavalry, and 5,000 mercenaries, faced a vast horde of Asiatics and mercenaries under the command of Darius, who had an estimated 100,000 troops. The Persian forces were a diverse mix of infantry, cavalry, and elephants, making them a significant threat to Alexander's army. Despite the odds being stacked against him, Alexander's strategic planning and military prowess paid off. He managed to outmaneuver Darius' forces, routing them and driving the Persian king from the battlefield. The victory at Issus not only secured Alexander's position as a great military leader but also allowed him to expand his empire, which would eventually include Egypt, Syria, and parts of India. This historical print, with its intricate details and dynamic composition, captures the grandeur and intensity of the Battle of Issus. The image of Alexander, resplendent in his armor, leading his troops to victory against the backdrop of the Turkish landscape, is a testament to the great events that shaped the ancient world.
